ABOUT

I’m a curator, writer and editor and am currently a Director of Parafin, an independent gallery in London.  Previously I was a Curator at Norwich Castle Museum (1995-97), Tate Britain (1997-2006) and Curator and then Director of Exhibitions at Haunch of Venison, London (2006-2013). Since the mid-1990s I have curated or co-curated over 100 exhibitions and have contributed essays and texts to numerous magazines, catalogues and books. I have a particular interest in forms of art dealing with ideas and experiences around land, landscape and place as well as the intersection between art and mountaineering. In 2006 Tate Publishing released the monograph Land Art. In 2013-14 I co-curated (with Nick Alfrey and Joy Sleeman) the Arts Council Collection exhibition Uncommon Ground: Land Art in Britain 1967-79, which travelled to four UK museums. In 2019 Zero Books published a selection of essays and interviews, In Land: Writings Around Land Art and Its Legacies. More on that here.

I also have an ongoing fascination for the 'slow time' of painting and its seemingly anachronistic yet weirdly vital position in the twenty-first century.

This website is intended as an ongoing archive and I shall be adding texts as and when I have time. However, if you are after something in particular and it is not here please be in touch and I will endeavour to get it to you. My email is ben@parafin.co.uk
